BOO Jewellery - Sustainability

BOO Diamonds

Our Ethics Statement

As part of our ongoing dedication to sustainable development and practices, the cutting and processing of all of our gem materials within BOO Diamonds is now done in controlled environments, where modern, environmentally-friendly equipment is encouraged and fair, equal employment is of the highest priority. This eliminates all forms of forced and compulsory labour, exploitation, and child labour; something that is of the utmost importance to us at Boo Jewellery.

The jewellery industry is competitive, where we see many low cost items manufactured by automated machines and computers, which can have a negative impact on the environment. We aim to combat this by ensuring that all of our stones come from workshops and factories that we have visited personally, with confidence that these businesses continually support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges. Additionally, we ensure that those who are employed within these businesses are treated well and fairly, without any form of discrimination.

The ethical issue that arises when it comes to the gathering or mining of gem materials, whether they are mineral, vegetable, or animal, is that these are all natural to the environment that we live in. Many of these elements are some miles under the Earth’s crust, oceans, glaciers and ice caps, as well as coming from our planet’s living animals and reefs.

Here at Boo Jewellery, our gems are sourced from the environment by two distinctly different types of supplier. Our first type of suppliers are local populations, who gather materials as a means of income, maximising financial gain at any cost. Some artisanal diggers will have little incentive to restore a landscape, but they may be the only source of some materials.  Our second type of suppliers are the multinational mining conglomerates, and mining giants, who will almost certainly be compelled by local governments to restore the environment when mining has ceased. BOO Bullion

Our Ethical and Environmental Policy

At BOO, we understand that jewellery design and making is tied to our planet, all the way from the finding of our gemstones, to the precious metals used within our pieces. As the UK’s leading manufacturer and retailer of precious bullion products, tools and equipment for the jewellery industry, we are committed to striving towards being as environmentally conscious as possible, always looking to discover new methods, technologies, businesses and practices that uphold the highest standards and regulations of environmental safeguarding. This involves looking at all aspects of our business to ensure that all of our operations are performed in the most socially responsible manner, including:

  • Our manufacturing processes with recycled gold and silver, which significantly cuts down on CO2 emissions. In fact, recycled silver emits ⅔ less CO2 emissions than mined silver.
  • Ethically sourced diamonds and gemstones, including the fair treatment of workers, and the restoration of landscapes.
  • Ensuring that our facilities have improved waste and energy management.
  • Regularly reviewing and auditing our standards and processes against important accreditations with ISO 9001, 14001, and 4501.
  • Continually working towards a climate positive workforce, which you can learn more about by clicking here

We believe that it is our responsibility and duty to respect human rights to the highest extent, and to promote ethical, social, and environmental practices to better the ethical standards of the jewellery making industry. Yes, we realise that we still have a long way to go in our journey of sustainability, but it is something that we are committed to working towards, and will always be.
